Haere mai means welcome in te reo Māori, and mai means to dance in Japanese, so the name Haere Mai Taiko crosses borders. Originally formed by NZJS as a Japanese dance group in 2002, the performers in Haere Mai Taiko began studying taiko drumming in 2004.
In 2011 Haere Mai Taiko were introduced to the renowned composers and teachers from Matsuri Kobo (まつり工房); Hisashi Kitahara (北原永), and Michiko Nakamori (中森道子). Matsuri Kobo became Haere Mai Taiko’s teachers and mentors in the performance art of Japanese taiko.
The strong, resonant sound of the Japanese taiko (or wadaiko 和太鼓) is a staple part of festivals, ceremonies, and celebrations held throughout Japan. It involves music, movement, and shouting/singing. It is a full body workout requiring teamwork, coordination, and a sense of rhythm, and can also involve additional string and woodwind instruments.
The Haere Mai Taiko team practices regularly to hone their craft, which takes time and dedication. This dedication shows in the high level of performance at community celebrations and occasions.
Haere Mai Taiko perform at all kinds of events throughout Aotearoa New Zealand, including corporate, sporting, festivals, and cultural events. If you would like to book the Haere Mai Taiko group, or find out about joining, please contact us here.
