The Association of Ki and Aikido of New Zealand is dedicated to preserving and teaching Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido as developed by Master Koichi Tohei. Our practice encompasses Ki Development, Aikido techniques, Ki Breathing, and Ki Meditation — a complete system for mind-body coordination rooted in Japanese tradition. Based in Grey Lynn, Auckland. All ages and fitness levels welcome.
Why Choose Ki Aikido?
The Practice
Classes begin with mind-body coordination training focused on relaxation and Ki development, followed by Aikido practice where we maintain this coordinated state through movement. Our health is deeply connected to how we move, and correct movement enhances wellbeing.
The goal is not just a strong body, but a strong mind—developed through forms, breathing exercises, and meditation working together.
Mind-Body Unity
We study mind and body as one unified whole because they constantly affect each other. When your mental state suffers, your body reflects it, and vice versa. We use the body to correct the mind—as the saying goes, “Mind controls the body, and the body is the shadow of the mind.”
Simple posture correction creates a more stable, calm mind. Physical tensions create mental tensions; breaking this cycle is fundamental to our practice.
Progress Through Testing
Evolution happens through Ki testing—evaluating the mind’s state through the body. Since it’s difficult to assess mental strength without concrete feedback, we use the body as our instrument.
Calmness enables precision. A calm mind is a precise mind. Only through calmness can you move quickly and think clearly and deeply.
For Everyone
Because this is a practice of the mind, Ki Aikido suits everyone. We focus on individual evolution against your own potential, never comparing practitioners to each other. There is no competition in being calm.
Each person’s goal is reaching their maximum potential through fundamentals anyone can apply. This is an art and practice that never ends.
