Aoteakai Tea Ceremony Group
Enjoy learning about the Way of Tea with experienced Japanese Tea Ceremony practitioners.
Japanese Tea Ceremony is known as sadō/chadō 茶道, ‘The Way of Tea’ or chanoyu 茶の湯 and is considered an art form. It involves the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha 抹茶 powdered green tea. Every action is performed in a specific way, and these procedures are collectively known as temae.
There are three main schools of practice, Urasenke, Omotesenke, and Mushakōjisenke tracing their lineage directly back to the influential 16th century tea practitioner and innovator Sen no Rikyū.
The Aoteakai Tea Ceremony Group follows the Urasenke tradition of the Way of Tea.
Aoteakai meets regularly to practice, however numbers are limited due to time and space restrictions. NZJS members are welcome to apply.
If you are interested in participating in a class, or would like to arrange a demonstration (fees may apply), please email Aoteakai Secretary Eleanor Goldsmith on: aoteakai@nzjapan.net
